New Student Information/FAQ’s

Welcome to The Phoenix Dance Studio!  This page is dedicated to answering all the questions you may have about taking classes with us.  If you still have questions, feel free to contact via email or phone.  We look forward to seeing you soon!

How do your classes work?  Our classes run in two formats:  Monthly classes and Choreography classes.  Our Monthly classes always start at the beginning of the month and run for that full month baring holidays etc.  Classes can range from 2 weeks to 5 weeks depending on how many days are in that specific month.  Most of the styles we offer are $17 per class x the number of weeks in that month.  Monthly classes also offer a drop in option, providing there is space.  A drop in is $20.  The exceptions are Stretch and Deep tissue foam rolling which are $10 per week for a series and $12 for a drop in.
Our Choreography classes are longer to allow for a full routine to be taught.  These classes run in a 10 week session culminating in a video shoot for those interested.  They run Sept-Dec (Fall session), Jan-Mar (Winter session) and April-June (Spring session).  In the summer, we offer a 7-8 week Create your own routine class instead culminating in a Summer showcase at the end of August.  Choreography and Create classes are also $17 per week x the number of weeks in that series.
We also offer Private and semi private lessons where you pick the day and time as well as the style of dance you want to work on.

Visit the Classes link.  This will create a drop down menu for all the different styles of classes we offer.   To see descriptions of the classes just for you, click on “For the Beginner” under each style.

What is Aerial dance?  Aerial dance uses apparatus (pole, silks, and lyra) to learn climbing, spins, holds, inverts and beautiful poses to improve strength and fitness while gaining body awareness and dance skills.

What is Exotic dance?  Exotic dance allows women to discover their sensual side and become more comfortable with moving their body in a way that exudes sexy confidence.  Exotic dance is a skill that is combined in all of our Pole classes, taught in workshops and in specific exotic choreography classes.  You may learn striptease, floor play, how to walk, and much more.

What is a technique class?  Technique classes are scheduled on a monthly basis and are used to teach appropriate level skills and techniques.  This class includes a warm-up, instruction of spins, poses, and transitions.  Class can also consist of small routines to practice fluid combinations and repetitions of moves to gain mastery.

What is a choregraphy class?  Choreography classes are typically 10 week sessions.  Each class will lead you through a warm-up and instruction of skills (spins, poses, transitions).  You will then learn a choreographed routine that you will then have the opportunity to video.  *Please note:  It is not mandatory that you video your routine.  Videoing is an opportunity for those interested in documenting their progress and to also take home and share.

What should I wear?  Whatever feels comfortable!  Yoga pants, leggings,  tank tops, t-shirts are all fine.   You can be sexy or sporty.  Bare feet are recommended for exotic, Intro and Beginner Pole, Lyra, and Silks.   Instructors may also offer other options as you advance.

What should I bring to class?  The most important thing is to bring a positive attitude.  Taking this class may be something new, exciting, and daring for you.  We are here to support each other and enjoy the experience.

Is there any nudity?  There is no nudity required in any of the classes.  The art of striptease is introduced in pole classes and focused on in the Exotic classes/workshops, but does not require nudity.  You push your own envelope.

What is the schedule?  The calender of classes can be found here.

What Classes can I take?  As a Beginner you can take any classes marked with a “I” (i.e. Pole I, Silks I, etc.)

Can I bring a friend?  Drop-ins are welcome in all of our technique classes.

Do I have to do the video shoot?  You are not required to do the student showcase or shoot a video.  However, if you choose not to perform, at least come and support.  This will allow you to get a feel for how the video shoots are run, support your fellow classmates, meet students from other classes, and just have fun.

Can I take private lessons?  You make take private lessons or semi-private classes.  Click here to see the pricing.

Can I rent floor space for practice? You may rent time to use the studio for $12 per hour (depending on staff and space availability).  We cannot guarantee private practice time.  (PRACTICE SAFETY INFORMATION For your safety, please only work on moves you have already learned in classes.  Trying new moves when practicing on your own or without someone who knows how to spot effectively can potentially create a dangerous situation.  If you are interested in a new move, contact your instructor-maybe they can teach it in class!  Or if you want to move a long at a faster pace, consider a private session.)

What if I can’t make it to all the classes?  You have 1 make up day pass for our technique classes per month.

What is the age range of participants?  The ladies in the Pole and Exotic classes vary in age from 18-70.  The median age is between 35-45.  We have college students to business professionals and stay at home moms.  Pole have an age restriction of 18 and up and our aerial classes are 14 and up.

How difficult are classes?  All of our beginner classes are designed for the everyday woman to develop fitness, balance, poise, and to become more self aware, feel sexier, and dance more musically.  You may attain any or all of these qualities over the course of the session.  Skills are taught and reviewed to gain mastery, while building strength and endurance.  Anticipate that the class will provide some challenge in any of these areas but that you will show constant improvement overall.

Are there any restrictions?  Some classes have age restrictions to those over 18 years of age.   There is a 200lbs safety weight limit for the aerial classes (pole, silks, and lyra).
